Posture for High Notes

Have you ever had the experience of playing through some ocarina tablature, seeing the highest note (which requires all fingering holes to be opened), and asking yourself how will I open all the holes without dropping the ocarina?

Finding the correct posture to balance the ocarina while accessing the high notes is a common challenge that all ocarinists must solve.  Fortunately, there is a simple method that will make your experience much more comfortable and much less precarious!

The key is that we want to maintain always at least three balanced points of contact.  You will notice that for the high Do, you will naturally have these three points of contact as you are covering the holes with your left thumb, right thumb, and left pinky.  Here are the steps for maintaining the points of contact when ascending beyond to the highest notes:

1) When removing your left thumb for the high Re, you can replace that third point of contact by setting your right pinky and/or ring finger on the tail end of the ocarina.

2) When removing your right thumb for the high Mi, rather than completely taking it off of the ocarina, simply slide it down just beneath the thumb-hole to maintain that point of contact.

3) When removing your left pinky for the high Fa, replace that third point of contact by setting your left index finger vertically against the side of the ocarina.
