In today’s edition, Joe shares:
  • Meet the Last Man. He's comfortable, content, and dying inside.
  • Why the safest life you can build is the most dangerous one.
  • The one question standing between you and comfortable mediocrity.

Nietzsche had a nightmare. It wasn't misery. It was you, comfortable.

He was the philosopher who spent his life warning against comfortable mediocrity. In Thus Spoke Zarathustra, he imagined a future human being he called the Last Man. Perfect sleep score. Dialed-in diet. Safe job. Safe opinions. Safe relationships. Nothing risked. Nothing to die for. The Last Man doesn't want heroic achievement. Too risky. Doesn't want deep conviction. Causes conflict. Just wants warmth, entertainment, modest prosperity, and everyone getting along.

"We have invented happiness," say the last men, and they blink.

Read that again. They blink. Mildly amused. Mildly content. Mildly alive.

Esther Perel built a career studying why comfortable relationships lose their heat. Her argument: when you play it safe with everything, you squeeze out eros, appetite, surprise, intensity. Nietzsche would tell her she's found a symptom of something bigger. Smooth out an entire life, a body, a career, a marriage, a belief system, and you don't get a magnificent life. You get a managed one.

Nietzsche wasn't asking you to suffer for the sake of suffering. He was telling you what suffering is for. Struggle, risk, resistance. That's the raw material every strong thing gets built from. Sand it off chasing comfort and you don't get peace. You get a species that can survive anything and build nothing.

Ask yourself right now: what have you talked yourself out of this year? What risk did you quietly skip because it was easier not to take it?

You don't get to opt out of difficulty. You only get to choose which difficulty you face. The one you pick, or the one that picks you.

Go find something today that makes you uncomfortable on purpose. The Last Man never does.

COMFORT IS NOT THE GOAL.

COMFORT IS THE TRAP. THE LAST MAN WINS WHEN YOU STOP CHOOSING HARD THINGS ON PURPOSE.
