Most People Get This Wrong About Fall Trips

Fall travel can be deceptively hard to plan.

The window for epic color is short, it moves, and everyone else is going the same places on the same two Saturdays.

Here are a few things our customers have shared with us to increase your success and enjoyment:

🗓️ Go midweek if you possibly can.
Peak foliage weekends in popular regions are some of the busiest travel days of the year. The same road on a Tuesday is a completely different experience, and lodging is often half the price.

🚪Pick the region next door to the famous one.
Vermont in October is beautiful and packed. The Berkshires, the Finger Lakes, western Maryland, northern Georgia, and the Upper Peninsula all deliver similar color with a fraction of the traffic.

🚗 Plan a drive, not a destination.
Fall is the one season where the road between places is the main event. A three-hour scenic route with a few stops beats a single town you sit in all weekend, and it films far better.

🏨 Book lodging before you're sure of the dates.
Peak rooms in popular areas go months ahead. Find something with a flexible cancellation window, lock it in, and adjust as the forecast firms up.

🍁 Have a backup a few hours south.
Peak shifts. If your window comes early or the wind takes the leaves down, being willing to drive two hours in the right direction can save the trip.

We've found that the best fall trips tend to be the loosely planned ones. Just pick a route, a room, and time to stop when something looks good.
