Our top tips for growing clematis on patios, porches and balconies (plus free shipping on $100+)

Many clematis have a large vining habit, but a few of our favorite varieties are more suited for container growing—among them, Clematis Katherina, Clematis The Vagabond, Clematis Success^® Candy and Clematis Filigree^™.

Let them grow in mounds, or add a miniature trellis. Here's how to grow them best:

Choose a thick-walled container at least 18 inches deep and 12 inches across
Line the bottom with gravel or rocks, then top with potting medium, filling nearly to the brim. Water it, then let sit for a few days to settle before planting.
The clematis plant may arrive with the roots tightly interwoven. Once you remove it from its original container, gently loosen those roots from the original potting medium, spreading them out before planting in the new container.
Fill in with soil 1-3" higher up the stem than the soil level in its original pot.
Water well, then keep the container out of the rain for up to two weeks to let the clematis roots settle and take hold.
Once you see signs of growth, move the container back into the open so the rain can water the plant regularly. Use a moisture meter if you're uncertain about how often to water the plant—infrequent but adequate water is key.
