I let a brain-scanning headset 'prime' my focus to make me a better gamer | Gizmodo

Flow. The fabled state of zen, where the world falls away save for the task directly in front of you. It’s a kind of euphoria-filled moment that’s so hard to attain and one you can only comprehend until after it’s over. There’s a reason competitive folk crave the flow state, and I’ve used one of the few gadgets that claim to actually help you get there — by literally using your brain. The issue is how we can even measure ‘flow.’ How do we know when we’re well and truly focused? It’s an issue the EEG technology company Neurable has been ironing out with a gaming headset developed alongside HP’s HyperX PC gaming brand. In its current iteration, the technology is clearly geared toward e-sports players or pro-level wannabes. Big picture, though, we may be on the brink of discovering yet another data point to add to the heap of health metrics we already track: your brain’s approximated level of focus.”

You're going to drink more water this summer. Here's how to make it count. | Hydrate smarter

When it’s 90 degrees and you’ve got a house full of people, hydration stops being a wellness concept and starts being a logistics problem. The X12 solves it — 1200 GPD fast flow means clean, filtered water on demand for however many people are at your table. Eleven stages of RO filtration plus added alkaline minerals strip out the stuff you don’t want and deliver water that’s crisp, clean, and actually worth drinking. Better water means more of it gets consumed, which is the whole point. On sale now, just in time for Prime Day: $899 (30% off). And yes, better water for life is definitely well worth the cost. [Ad]

Expecting summer visitors? Here's how I set up my Wi-Fi network for guests in minutes | PCMag

“Summer is peak travel season, and if you’re opening your home to friends or family, get ready to also share your internet. You’ll want to prep your Wi-Fi network in advance to avoid slowdowns, potential security holes, and constantly having to share (and re-share) your personal Wi-Fi password. I’ve figured out an easy way to get guests connected when they visit my house, so I can focus less on internet troubleshooting and more on having a good time. Here’s what you need to do.”

Most Americans say climate change is making life more expensive. They're right | Gizmodo

“There are numerous factors contributing to the cost of living crisis in the U.S., but a surprising number of Americans across the political spectrum believe rising global temperatures are at least partly to blame. In a recent survey … two-thirds (67%) of registered voters said climate change is affecting the cost of living in the United States. Roughly the same proportion of respondents (64%) said it is affecting their own monthly expenses, particularly when it comes to utility bills, groceries, vehicle costs, and home insurance.”

Goblin sharks caught on camera in their natural habitat for the first time | Nautilus

“Goblin sharks are far from nature’s cuddliest creations. With their long snouts, sharp, thorn-like teeth, and protruding jaws, they’re downright ugly. These living fossils have been lurking in the depths for around 120 million years, but unfortunately, most of our knowledge about them comes from accidental catches by fishing trawlers. Living goblin sharks have been observed, but only briefly. These specimens were brought to the surface and watched in shallow waters for short periods of time until they perished. While these unlucky goblin sharks yielded valuable information about how they capture prey in their gnarly jaws, researchers haven’t been able to see them in their native habitat, thousands of feet beneath the ocean — until now.”
