Too much happiness sent a woman to the emergency room in an incredibly rare case | ScienceAlert

“The phrase ‘I could die of happiness’ is not meant to be taken literally. But as it turns out, you actually can — though it is exceedingly rare. A new case study … tells the unusual story of a 65-year-old woman who was so desperately happy after attending her daughter’s wedding, doctors thought she was having a heart attack. For three days after the festivities, she suffered chest pain and shortness of breath. At first, when the woman sought medical advice for her chest pain, which she had experienced a few months prior as well, she was ‘urgently referred to the emergency department,’ the case study authors report. But her tests came back with confusing results.”

The mushroom in your coffee has neuroscientists talking | Meet the mushroom

Lion’s mane has spent the last decade building a reputation as one of the most-studied ingredients in the nootropic world, credited with supporting focus and mental clarity in ways most supplements only claim to. Four Sigmatic built its whole brand around it more than ten years ago, and now it’s folded directly into a single scoop of real Arabica coffee alongside protein, creatine, and collagen. No pills, no extra steps, no second drawer of supplements to remember. Just one cup that does the thinking for you, and 400 million cups of proof that people keep coming back for it. [Ad]

Watch a mad scientist YouTuber make lightning in a bottle from mercury and neon | Gizmodo

“The cliché is that the only certainties in life are death and taxes. I submit, however, that that particular aphorism lacks vision. If you’re a habitual YouTube viewer and/or someone with an interest in science, you’ll already know that there are at least two more things on which you can rely: that anything uploaded by Drake ‘Styropyro’ Anthony will be both a) worth watching and b) at least mildly terrifying. So it proves for our hero’s latest video, which apparently doesn’t meet the standards for his main channel — on which he was last seen wiring a shitton of car batteries together, if you’ve forgotten — and thus surfaced on his second channel instead. Don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s any less quintessentially Styropyro, though: not unless you think that putting together a plasma tube that generates light by shaking some mercury metal sealed within somehow constitutes going soft.”

California's wild pig problem started when a rich guy imported Russian chaos hogs | Boing Boing

“California already had feral pigs. Then a Monterey County landowner added Russian wild boars for sport hunting, and nature responded with a century-long ‘absolutely not.’ Like many problems in California, a rich man decided he wanted to do something and to hell with the public good. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says Spanish and Russian settlers introduced domestic pigs to California in the early 1700s. Many escaped and became feral. Then, in the 1920s, a Monterey County landowner wanted to hunt something more challenging and introduced European wild boar. The boar bred with those feral domestic pigs, creating the hybrid wild pigs that have now spread through much of the state like 200-pound rats with tusks.”

A tiny machine that mines bitcoin the way you buy a lottery ticket | Shoot your shot

Somewhere out there, someone is about to solo-mine a full Bitcoin block reward. Could be a data center. Could be the little machine humming on your desk. The BlockChance Bitcoin Ticket Miner runs 24/7, submitting tickets for a shot at the whole reward, not some fractional pool payout. Honest odds: about 1 in 17,800 per year. Long shot, sure, but someone’s year is coming, and yours costs less power than a light bulb to enter, tracked live on a 2.8-inch touchscreen while you wait. [Ad]

There are 3 types of farters. Which one are you? | Popular Science

“Since grade school, we’ve all understood that there is more than one kind of fart. You have the high-pitched Whistler, the stomach-rumbling Growler, the stealthy Crop Duster and, of course, the Silent-But-Deadly. While thorough and expansive, these nicknames don’t really add much to the scientific discourse around flatulence–and no, your friend asking ‘What did you eat?’ while frantically waving their hands in front of their face doesn’t count as scientific inquiry. There is hope, however, for a better understanding of the hows and whys of farting. The Human Flatus Atlas has asked for volunteers to put on wearable sensors in the hopes of mapping the first atlas of intestinal gas. By attaching a small smart device near their blowholes, participants are able to provide the organization with valuable data to aid in their mission to unlock the mystery of the human gastrointestinal system.”
