Dr. Karuma Ganesh. I stand up to cancer because I want to make a difference.

Dear Friend,

The idea of a mini-tumor in a lab dish might sound frightening. But for Karuna Ganesh, M.D., Ph.D., a medical oncologist with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, these organoids, as they're known, are vital research tools.

With SU2C funding, Dr. Ganesh has used organoids to study cancer plasticity — cancer cells' uncanny ability to change and adapt to their environments. She has also led SU2C-funded research that may help explain the alarming increase in colorectal cancer among younger adults.

Dr. Ganesh's work is instrumental in helping understand the underlying mechanisms of cancer, and how cancer research can lead to new treatments and ways of preventing cancer in the first place.
