Summer, water, precision – just how water-resistant are STOWA watches?

Dear STOWA customers,

With the warm summer months upon us, many of our customers are asking a familiar question: Can I wear my watch while swimming, showering, or diving? The answer lies in the ATM rating, which is engraved on the back of every STOWA watch.

Every STOWA watch labeled as water-resistant meets the requirements of DIN 8310 in its original, out-of-the-box condition. The engraved ATM rating indicates the static test pressure − the following overview shows you what that means in everyday life.

Your STOWA team from the Black Forest

3 BAR / 3 ATM
≈ 30 meters
Resistant to splashes — suitable for light rain and hand washing.
e.g. Antea KS
5 BAR / 5 ATM
≈ 50 meters
You can shower without any problems. Well-suited for brief contact with water.
e.g. Partitio Classic, Antea 365 & 390
10 BAR / 10 ATM
≈ 100 meters
Showering and occasional swimming. Our recommendation as a minimum standard for swimming.
e.g. Flieger Verus 42 & Tempora Big Eye
20 BAR / 20 ATM
≈ 200 meters
Suitable for swimming. Also designed for more active water activities.
e.g. Fieldwatch Terra & all Classic-Sport models
100 BAR / 100 ATM
≈ 1000 meters
Designed for swimming and professional diving.
e.g. Prodiver
Important note regarding water resistance

Please note that the indication of water resistance applies to the new condition of the watch and is not a permanent characteristic according to DIN 8310. The sealing elements of your watch are subject to natural ageing. Seals, e.g. in crowns and chronograph pushers, are also subject to increased wear due to the movement of the components, and impacts on the corresponding areas can also lead to damage to the seals.

You should therefore generally try to avoid contact between your watch and water.
If contact with water is unavoidable, have your watch checked for water resistance at least once a year, but at the latest before any planned contact with water. You can have this check carried out by us or a watchmaker in your area.

         Practical tips for the summer

  • Refrain from operating the crown or chronograph pusher in water.
  • Make sure the crown is properly fitted to the case before swimming − for watches with a screw-down crown, please screw it down tightly.
  • When diving, the pressure increases by 1 bar for every 10 meters of depth. For regular use, we recommend our Prodiver sport and diving watches.
  • Impacts to the crown or case can damage the seals − even if there is no visible damage.
