When we were out in the wheat fields for harvest, it was unbelievably hot and dry. By the time noon rolled around, we were a little sunburned and a lot hungry.
Then, a car pulled up on the edge of the field. Out stepped Derek’s mom. She came bearing cold drinks, peach cobbler, pasta salad, and the star of the show: her famous fried chicken—still warm, perfectly crisp, and made with our very own flour.
Like clockwork, the farmers finished the rows they were on, and pulled up in their combines to meet her. Right there in the wheat field, the whole team gathered around the table, passing paper plates, wiping our hands on dusty jeans, and enjoying this fried chicken. And for a few minutes, in the middle of harvest chaos, we slowed down. People ate. Laughed. Refueled.
It’s tender, golden, and simple—not fancy, just right.
Because this food—and this moment—felt too good to keep to ourselves, we asked if we could share the harvest fried chicken recipe with you. Derek’s mom said yes.
