How to deal with the fear of water?
It is estimated that about half of the adult population suffers from different levels of hydrophobia. How to let loose and start enjoying the water. Water helps people dealing with traumas, relax and let loose. Watsu, Jahra, water relief, hydrotherapy are all methods that make it easier for adults to overcome fears and phobias. But what happens when you fear the water itself? Water phobia, water anxiety, or fear of water among the older population are expressed in the avoiding swimming laps or the sea, and fear from entering water - even shallow water. As phobias do, sometimes they are justified and sometimes not. Fear of water can result from childhood trauma, almost drowning, a drowning of a relative/friend, or if a person is thrown into the water, followed by anxiety. Sometimes fear of water begins in childhood but continues into adolescence and accompanies the man or woman in their lives as adults and parents of children. Water will simply paralyze them with fear, causing irrational reactions, raised heart rate, and they miss the pleasure of being in the water. In such cases, the sooner we confront the fear of the child and the adolescent the easier it is to overcome. As the years pass, fear develops into a real and unnecessary anxiety that must be dealt with as soon as possible. However, experienced swimmers undergo training in which they learn how to practice controlled and gradual entry to the lap, until the psychological barrier is broken, and swimming instruction begins. The fear of the water is expressed in stress around laps or bodies of water, fear of partial entry to the water, fear of shallow water, fear of putting your head underwater, and a feeling of suffocation and lack of control around water. Overcoming fear of water In the hot summers, the preferred pastime is dipping in cool water, in the lap or in the sea. However, there is a significant population of adults who do not know how to swim or avoid learning because they are afraid of water, ashamed, afraid, or embarrassed to admit it (due to age). It is estimated that about 50% of the adult population suffers from different levels of fear of water. Overcoming water phobia begins with the individual and gradual trust building with the swimming coach, by sharing experiences and the process steps. The coach gets to know the student and understand how deep the fear of the water is, how it expresses itself, at what age it started, whether it interferes with daily routine and why the studentchose to confront his fear and befriend the water. Then you enter the water and begin to get used to being in them slowly. You can start from the toddler's lap, where the water is about 8-12 inch deep and you can touch the floor with both your hands and legs. You can also start from the shallows, which is 1 yard deep. The student begins with a lap noodle and stand in the water next to a wall. The goal of the practice is to make the student feel safe and relaxed in the environment, adapt to the way water feels, and gradually remove the sense of danger. After the initial adjustment and trust building stages, you should gradually learn to put your whole body into the water, dip your head and stay away from the wall. In most cases, overcoming phobia frees the students and make them fall in love with the water and start learning how to swim. If you fear water, give yourself a gift and learn how to overcome fear and start enjoying yourself. If there are still remnants of the ancient fears, it is worth learning the breaststroke since your head remains above water most of the time. Good Luck.
