Urban Cowboy Denver
Denver, CO, USA
You might expect a bit more Western kitsch from a hotel called Urban Cowboy, but this is Capitol Hill, one of the hippest neighborhoods in Denver. And the building is no barn, but a beautifully preserved 1886 Victorian mansion whose historical details only accentuate the hotel’s maximalist, retro-inspired interior design.

Hôtel Saint-Georges
Megève, France
Hôtel Saint-Georges defies easy categorization. On the one hand, it’s a classic Savoyard lodge whose interiors are just about as far as it’s possible to get from “quiet luxe” minimalism. But the aesthetic is a sort of heightened Alpine fantasy as interpreted by the British artist and designer Luke Edward Hall.

Rosewood Phuket
Kathu, Thailand
Sitting just steps from the beach, the 71 freestanding pavilions and villas of Rosewood Phuket offer an extra measure of privacy, as well as plenty of space to spread out; floor-to-ceiling windows open onto large garden terraces and all of them include plunge pools, if not full-scale swimming pools.

Crafted at Powdermills
Battle, UK
Crafted at Powdermills has turned a 17th-century gunpowder mill, complete with mixing pots now repurposed as fire pits, into a 54-room retreat where artistic ambition meets genuine warmth. Designer Christodoulou rejected country house cliché, refusing to choose between comfort and experimentation.

Castello Infinity Suites
Crete, Greece
The coastal enclave of Agia Pelagia, less than half an hour’s drive from Heraklion, is one of Crete’s most pleasant spots; this lovely seaside village is only made more appealing by the presence of a hotel like Castello Infinity Suites. This is a luxury boutique hotel with a decided emphasis on privacy and tranquility.

The hotel is oriented around a central courtyard, appropriate for this walled city.

Kenoza Hall
Kenoza Lake, NY, USA
We’re being treated to an ever-increasing diversity of hotels in the Catskills. Case in point: Kenoza Hall. This is a true beauty, an 1880 Victorian boarding house set on 55 acres of lakefront land, transformed into a 22-room boutique hotel supplemented by a constellation of freestanding bungalows and a Sebastian Kneipp-inspired spa.
