Hi there,
At face value, positivity is a good thing. But what if positivity feels bad to you rather than good?
In this week’s AskTeal episode, Teal explains that some people subconsciously boycott positivity because they were traumatized specifically by positivity, or because positivity was used as a tool of abuse against them.
Positivity is not a positive thing when it is used to deny, negate, invalidate, suppress, disown, reject, or run away from what is real.
When this happens, positivity becomes toxic positivity, an extreme form of avoidant resistance and a form of willful denial.
If you grew up around this, you may have learned to associate positive language with isolation, erasure, danger, gaslighting, terror, or shame.
So when you hear something like “look on the bright side,” it can trigger a threat response, almost like you have an allergy to positivity.
Watch the full video and read the full article below to understand why your “negativity” may actually be a survival mechanism, not something that is wrong with you.
