A man can be deeply in love with a woman and still not know how to create the kind of relationship they both actually want.

A woman can deeply want to trust and rely on a man, yet still finds herself holding it all together.

On the practical side

On the practical side, this might look like remembering what needs to get done around the house, keeping track of appointments, and following through so nothing falls through the cracks.

On the emotional side

On the emotional side, it might look like being the one who initiates deeper conversations, who works to keep intimacy and connection alive, and who pushes the relationship forward when it feels stagnant.

Caring about someone does not automatically give you the relationship skills you need to make the relationship work.

One important missing skill

One of the most important missing skills in this relationship dynamic is masculine containment.

When a man provides containment, he makes the conscious decision to put his energy around a woman and take responsibility for her well-being.

In practice

In practice, this means taking initiative, providing direction, staying emotionally present, offering support, creating safety, and managing situations when needed.

Many men were never shown how to do this. They may care deeply, yet wait for exact instructions, respond only to what is directly asked of them, or step back because they are afraid of getting it wrong.

Many women feel the painful impact of the absence of containment without having the clarity to describe exactly what is missing for her.

They may know that they want support, safety, emotional presence, or leadership, but struggle to explain specifically what that looks like or why it matters so much. They often just end up feeling confused about why they're so irritated, stressed, frustrated, sad, or alone.

Learning about containment can give men clearer guidance for having relationships with the women in their lives. It can also give women more information about what they need and how to communicate those needs more clearly.
