Hi there,
A man can believe he is showing up in every way possible while the woman in his life experiences very little of it landing.
When this happens, it is easy for him to become defensive and for her to feel increasingly alone.
But the real question is:
Why is there such a gap between what he believes he is providing and what she actually experiences?
Teal calls this The Containment Gap, and she dedicates an entire lesson to it inside Mastering Masculinity in Relationships.
This gap can happen for several very different reasons:
| ◆ |
Her needs for certain elements of containment may be greater than what he is willing or able to provide, which may point to an issue of compatibility.
| ◆ |
Her standard for what good containment looks like may be different from the standard he uses to judge his own contribution.
| ◆ |
He may be highly attentive to one area of her wellbeing while completely missing another.
| ◆ |
He may not recognize how something he did, or failed to do, went against her best interests.
| ◆ |
He may decide that something is not a big deal and therefore dismiss how deeply it affects her.
For example, a man might ensure that a woman never experiences financial pressure while leaving her feeling emotionally neglected and alone.
When he looks at the relationship, he sees how much he provides.
When she looks at it, she feels the area of her wellbeing that is receiving little or no care.
Both are experiencing pain, but they have not yet come into the same reality about why this is happening or what to do about it.
When a woman says she does not feel supported, the worst response is to immediately panic, defend yourself, or decide that she should be okay.
Instead of that, try becoming curious.
Ask questions because you genuinely want to understand. Show her that you recognize the problem and understand how it is affecting her. Pay close attention to what she needs and how she is feeling before jumping to a solution.
The goal is for both people to come into the same reality before deciding what to do next.
If you’re a man, this gives you a much clearer starting point than defending everything you already do or waiting for her to provide exact instructions.
If you’re a woman, the Containment Gap can help you make sense of why you can still feel unsupported even when a man is contributing in visible ways. It gives you a clearer reference point for whether something may be missing in the areas of support, standards, emotional attunement, or compatibility.

And this is only part of one of the 38 lessons inside Mastering Masculinity in Relationships.
The course begins with an introduction and then moves through eight pillars. If you follow the recommended structure, each pillar becomes one week of the experience:
🔷 Week 1: The Mastery of Containment and Its Ingredients, Part 1
Learn what masculine containment actually is and explore its first ingredients: putting your energy around her, positive ownership, and responsibility for her wellbeing.
🔷 Week 2: The Mastery of Containment and Its Ingredients, Part 2
Develop greater attunement, understanding, responsiveness, safety, and security. Learn why noticing what a woman feels is different from responding in a way that supports her wellbeing.
🔷 Week 3: The Mastery of Containment and Its Ingredients, Part 3
Explore support and availability, structure, direction, leadership, and creating or managing situations. Learn how a man can take an active role while a woman’s autonomy remains intact.
🔷 Week 4: Key Components of Containment
Examine the habits that destroy containment, the role of respect, the Containment Gap, compatibility, and what it means to contain the things a woman loves. Teal also addresses what to do when the responsibility involved in containment feels daunting.
🔷 Week 5: Game Changers, Part 1
Understand the role fear and safety play in women’s lives, why trustworthiness matters so deeply, and the unsafety gap between men and women. Teal also addresses common misunderstandings about attraction, women playing hard to get, and why women might cheat.
🔷 Week 6: Game Changers, Part 2
Learn to recognize when a surface conflict is pointing to a deeper issue in the relationship. Explore how to move beyond misunderstandings and speak both a woman’s love language and the language of emotions.
🔷 Week 7: Game Changers, Part 3
Learn how to respond when a woman shares how she feels with you and how to navigate the vulnerability conundrum. Teal also explores why men need other men, what protective consideration looks like, and why healthy masculinity requires becoming active rather than passive.
🔷 Week 8: Game Changers, Part 4 and Conclusion
Explore what it means for a man to have something going for him, how the respect men want is earned, and why different women require different approaches to sexuality. The course concludes by exploring how to navigate relationships with women who might resist masculine containment.
