Hi there,

Men and women can experience the same relationship very differently. But most are given surprisingly little information about how the other experiences relationships and the world.

If you're a man

You may never have been taught how large a role fear plays in women's lives.

You may look at a situation and see no reason for a woman to feel afraid. But when you minimize her fear, become defensive, or focus only on proving that your intentions were good, your response may increase the very fear you want to reduce.

A woman feeling safe with you depends on more than being protected from the threats that are obvious to you. It also depends on whether you are trustworthy, emotionally available, and attuned to what she is experiencing.

If you're a woman

You may never have been taught how much a man needs to feel wanted and useful.

He needs to feel like he has a meaningful role in the lives of the people he loves.

When you believe that you should not need anything from a man, he experiences the relationship as having no clear place for him. This can leave him unsure of his role, which can affect his self-esteem and how connected he feels.

When these differences go unseen, they can lead to painful cycles in the relationship.

She feels afraid, and she reaches for reassurance.

He doesn't understand how deep that fear runs, so he minimizes it or tells her she's overreacting.

His response signals that he isn't paying attention to her safety, so her fear grows instead of settling.

Meanwhile, he doesn't feel needed. When she pulls back or stops relying on him, he reads it as proof that he has no place in her life.

The less needed he feels, the less he shows up. The less he shows up, the less safe she feels.

Neither one understands what's actually happening for the other, so the pattern repeats.
