For many of us, a swig of mouthwash twice a day forms a part of our oral hygiene routine.
But the researchers at Harvard University found that people who used mouthwash twice a day were around 55 percent more likely to develop diabetes or dangerous blood sugar spikes within three years.
This is because many mouthwashes contain antibacterial compounds — such as chlorhexidine, triclosan, cetylpyridinium chloride, alcohol, fluoride, and peroxide — that kill bacteria in order to help prevent gingivitis, tooth decay, and other oral health conditions.
What’s the problem with these antibacterial compounds?
They also destroy the "good" bacteria in the mouth that are important for the formation of nitric oxide.
Nitric oxide helps to regulate insulin and lower blood pressure.
Hence, without nitric oxide, you’ll have a higher risk of developing diabetes and high blood pressure.
And at the same time, it makes room for potentially harmful bacteria to thrive.
The good news is you don't need to use mouthwash in order to maintain proper oral health care as it does not ensure that food buildup and plaque are removed from your teeth.
Instead of mouthwash, I recommend one of the following:
-
Coconut Pulling – Coconut pulling is an ancient technique used to gently and effectively clean the mouth. It involves swishing oil around in the mouth in a similar way to mouthwash, but for a much more extended period.
-
Homemade Mouthwash – Make your own homemade mouthwash by mixing a ½ tablespoon of baking soda with water and adding a pinch of sea salt. These are all natural ingredients that will help to freshen your breath too.
