Lean Publishing is the act of publishing an in-progress book using lightweight tools and many iterations to get reader feedback, pivot until you have the right book and build traction once you do.

Lean Publishing is the philosophy behind Leanpub. The Lean Publishing motto is "publish early, publish often." Lean Publishing originated in The Lean Publishing Manifesto, published in 2010, which declared that "a book is a startup", and applied the principles of Lean Startup to the process of writing and publishing books as Lean Publishing. The original Lean Publishing idea was then expanded into the full Lean Publishing Definition in 2013, and is most fully expressed in the book Lean Publishing, which is free to read on Leanpub.

The original definition of Lean Publishing only talks about books, but as Leanpub grew, we realized that Lean Publishing applies equally but also to courses. So, we added courses to Leanpub. On Leanpub, courses are published using the same lightweight tools as books: just as you can write in plain text and click a button to publish a book, you can also write in plain text and click a button to publish an online course, with quizzes, exercises and automated marking.
