Eighty years on, veterans of D-Day, all at least in their late 90s, as well as heads of state and government, this week commemorated the Normandy landings of June 6th 1944. “Four years almost to the day the last man was taken off the beaches at Dunkirk,” we wrote a few days after the invasion. We looked forward to the battles still to be fought—and a post-war world that should “not only be built for the war generation but round them and by them as well”.
