Victory over West Ham United this Sunday, the last day of one of the English Premier League’s
most exciting seasons,
will secure Manchester City a record fourth consecutive championship. But not so long ago, City weren’t even the best team in Manchester: when they were relegated to the third tier of English football in 1998, their fans lived on
gallows humour
rather than glory.
City’s rise has been fuelled by the financial clout of their owners, Abu Dhabi’s royal family. Yet as we reported in 2019, it also owes much to shrewd
recruitment of players;
less well-heeled teams, such as
Brentford,
have bought wisely too.
