The internet in America: Neutral no more
Yesterday the Federal Communications Commission voted to repeal regulations which ensure that American internet-service providers do not privilege some types of online content over others. The repealers argue that these “net-neutrality” rules pose an unnecessary burden on internet providers, without helping consumers. But policing the behaviour of such companies will be a challenge, writes our media correspondent
 
 
 
 
Russia: A suitcase full of dollars
Today Alexei Ulyukayev, Russia’s former economy minister, was sentenced to eight years in a penal colony for corruption. The prosecution says he demanded $2m from Igor Sechin, the boss of Rosneft, to approve Rosneft’s purchase of Bashneft, an oil producer. Mr Ulyukayev says he was set up. The case is seen not as a good-faith anti-corruption effort, but as the result of clan warfare. The verdict will fuel tensions within Russia’s elite

America’s skies: Still open(ish)
On Wednesday it emerged that President Donald Trump had decided to hold off on imposing sanctions against the three big Gulf carriers—Emirates of Dubai, Etihad of Abu Dhabi, and Qatar Airways—for what America’s big airlines allege are unfair subsidies from their governments. This is good for American flyers: the Gulf airlines’ new planes, good service and marketing have forced competitors to improve their offerings too
 
 
 
Looking to outer space: To find another race
‘Oumuamua, discovered tumbling through space on October 19th, has already made history. It is the first ever object to be designated as “interstellar”, because its travelling speed means that it cannot be native to the solar system. Some scientists are excited by the possibility that it may not be an asteroid. An organisation dedicated to hunting for alien life is investigating. But it looks unlikely to find that ‘Oumuamua is a spacecraft
