Starmer condemns Farage for 'exploiting' Henry Nowak’s death
|
Sir Keir Starmer hit out at Nigel Farage’s “appeal for rage” in response to the murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, after protesters clashed with police, injuring 11 officers.
The prime minister condemned the call as “unforgivable”, hours after scenes of unrest in Southampton overnight.
They followed an outcry over the police handling of the murder, which saw Mr Nowak was handcuffed by officers as he lay dying after his killer, 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa, falsely claimed he had been the victim of a racist attack.
Sir Keir criticised the Reform UK leader at PMQs, saying “We must not allow this tragedy to be hijacked by anyone who seeks to divide us.”
The family of the murdered teenager have also appealed for their son’s tragic death not to be used to stoke further division and hatred.
But as Mr Farage attacked what he claims is a “two-tier justice system” and later warned that “what you saw in Southampton… is the beginning” it was clear that plea had fallen on deaf ears.

Nigel Farage is conducting a culture war over Henry Nowak’s grave |
With his call for ‘pure cold rage’ in response to the murder of student Henry Nowak, the Reform UK leader is playing an incendiary game – starting with a conclusion about two-tier policing, then searching for a case to fit it, says Festus Akinbusoye.
Here’s what you had to say:

The police forces seem to consist of both extremes when it comes to handling situations involving minorities: complete unfairness (as in the case of the young schoolgirl who was invasively strip-searched for drugs, ignoring her time of the month) and then cases like this, and the perceived laxity towards grooming gangs. The problem is police training and discipline. How on earth did they resort to handcuffing an injured, bleeding man? It seemed to have taken leave of basic sense.

Farage is a disgrace. So are any politicians trying to make political capital out of this case, or similar cases. Individual misjudgements do not support the allegation of systemic two-tier policing, and rage is not an appropriate response.
