It's Glass....Get It?? Greetings! MR Visual Manager Emily Zirimis here. It’s been a minute since I talked about an Instagram trend, but a new one has captured my heart and now I can’t stop thinking about it. A brief accounting of how I got here:
Last year, Mansur Gavriel began selling colorful Murano glassware for a limited time during the holidays, and then did it again this past season.
And right around the time Alexa De La Cruz made a debut in my Instagram feed last summer, I started seeing her glass heart pendants pop up all over New York and online.
Then in Maryam Nassir Zadeh’s Fall 2018 show, glass jewelry was prominent — this look being my favorite example.
Casa Shop has also been on the Italian glass beat for a while, with quirky pieces this bowl now selling out almost immediately.
And then last week, Monica Khemsurov of Sight Unseen wrote about the murano glass trend, stating that cool glassware has been sitting in her web browser for about a year now, and I realized: Same.
Why glass? I can’t help but draw a connection between this trend and 90’s-era jewelry a la Phoebe in Friends and/or Drew Barrymore, generally. It sits on that satisfying (ironic?) border of cool and art school teacher.
I finally recently splurged on a vintage Italian glass mushroom-style lamp on Etsy in the same vein as this one (which I’ve also seen on various dreamy IG accounts like @thank you_ok and @alilabelle) and I’ve never felt better about a purchase. Mark my words: 2019 will be the year of the mushroom.
If you’re on the same wave, below are some shopping picks for your glass-inclined pleasure. |
