How often do we see Americans over 50 celebrated for the new projects they’re launching, the big problems they’re solving, and for the people they’re helping?
Not enough.
But one incredible initiative is dedicated to doing just that: AARP’s Purpose Prize.
The Purpose Prize is a national award in the United States that celebrates people aged 50 and older who are using their life experience to make a difference. The winners receive an incredible prize: $50,0000 for their organization, technical assistance to support their projects, and resources to broaden their organization's impact. It’s truly amazing.
Earlier this year, we profiled three of the prize’s 2023 winners - and we couldn’t have been more inspired. Take a look back at our stories about the powerful work of Janice Malone, Peter Jensen and Laura Stachel.
But, first, we have an invitation for you. It’s a very big deal. Applications for next year’s Purpose Prize are open now. Take a minute to think of your 50+ friend, colleague or neighbor who - at the age of 40 or above - founded a 501(c)(3) or (4) non profit organization that is doing something extraordinary to make a better future for people of any age.
AARP wants to hear about all of the amazing leaders who fit the bill. The non-profit you have in mind doesn’t need to be an initiative with a massive budget or a big team.
Apply here!! Applications are due February 29, 2024.
**And if you want more information, you can join AARP's virtual information session to answer questions about the application process. You can register for the January 31, 2024 (4 pm ET) session here.
Can you tell me your expertise in 3 sentences?
Everyone has one - an expertise, that is - and it is important that you can articulate it online and in real life. Why? Because you could become a sought after speaker, the go-to expert for journalists looking to strengthen a story, the best podcast guest in the industry - or more. But also because we need more women's voices on blast in every single arena. We live in a world where 85 percent of op-eds are still penned by men.
Join us this year as we dive into all things expertise. We'll help you build your own personal brand agency where you're the star client. I'll be there every step of the way. This is the initiative of the brand new Riveter School.
What is Riveter School? A mix of masterclasses (with homework), small group strategy sessions, expert townhalls, and online discussion forums created with the sole purpose of telling your story.
Why? As this awesome article in Forbes explains:
“[S]tories have the power to grab attention, connect with emotion and persuade us to take action. Storytelling is not merely a commercial ploy. It is a necessary ability for entrepreneurs, business owners and leaders who wish to distinguish themselves in today's competitive and noisy market.”
How will you teach us to tell our stories?
We will focus on developing your story, how to effectively share your story and building an audience to share your story with.
We will focus on nine discrete topics in 2024. You can join as a “Graduate Experience Member” and commit to learning all nine - or you can purchase individual masterclasses. (We recommend the former! Let’s do this!). The topics include:
- Identifying your story “niche” and your thought leadership framework
- Writing for and growing “written social media”: Twitter and LinkedIn
- Filming for and growing “visual social media”: TikTok, YouTube and Instagram
- Writing your keynote and landing speaking opportunities
- Writing your “key column/op-ed” (for newsletters, newspapers & more!) and placing your words for amplification
- Using AI to make it all easier: Making your content work for you
- When to start & how to build owned platforms: Podcast and Newsletter
- Growing your audience organically with swaps, partnerships and more
- Monetizing your expertise via partnerships, affiliates and more
How much does it cost?
