Knowing your fertility options isn’t the same as having them

Americans are having fewer children and having them later. But efforts to bring down costs and widen coverage of fertility care remain embryonic. Potential federal tailwinds include a proposed rule that would create a pathway for standalone employer fertility benefits—although it would exclude elective egg freezing—and the reintroduction of the Right to IVF Act. However, lawmakers in Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma have considered new reporting requirements that physicians warn could restrict assisted reproductive care. Meanwhile, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been posting about her egg freezing journey—publicizing what has often been a private and relatively opaque health experience.

Recent industry activity is tackling a component of that opacity head-on by widening access to personalized fertility data and insights. A new calculator from Spring Fertility and Branch Care estimates the odds of egg yield per IVF cycle using inputs like age, weight, and hormone levels. WHOOP, meanwhile, has integrated with Natural Cycles to turn overnight skin temperature into a fertility status check. And pre-seed startup Kiara Health is building an AI platform that translates lab work and biomarkers into a pre-visit fertility plan. While it’s exciting to see digital health companies advancing access to information—an important first step—knowing what to do is not the same as being able to do it.
