I've been inside the Accademia in Florence dozens of times.
And each time I visit, I slow down before making that final turn.
Not because I don't know what's coming.
But exactly the opposite.
I've learned something over the years: everyone who visits Florence thinks they know what to expect from Michelangelo's David. They've seen the posters. The coffee mugs. The photos online. They walk in ready to see a statue and end up missing the stories that make this one of the most famous sculptures in the world.
David’s grand reveal was intentionally staged inside the Accademia Gallery.
You don't walk in and immediately see him.
The gallery slowly builds anticipation until, suddenly, there he is at the end of the hall. Taller than you could have imagined. And with jaw-dropping detail.
And honestly... my favorite part isn't even the statue. It's watching people's faces when they first see it. That moment is why I still love taking people there.
Because David isn't just something you look at.
It's something you experience.
Cheers,
