American consumers withstood rising inflation to power a strong start to the holiday shopping season, with big retailers reporting higher sales and expectations for a solid finish to the year.
Sales at U.S. retail stores, online sellers and restaurants rose by a seasonally adjusted 1.7% in October compared with the previous month, Gabriel T. Rubin writes.
Still, the supply-chain jam is making its stubborn presence known.
Online shopping has dominated the early days of the holiday retail rush, but that is expected to shift to in-store shopping as the holidays get closer and customers try to avoid shipping delays.
And some gift-givers may choose to opt out of material gifts altogether.
More holiday data points:
-
Target and Walmart each reported higher sales in the latest quarter as consumers shopped early for the winter holidays, the Journal reports.
-
Both also said they had been able to stock up on inventory ahead of Black Friday, highlighting large companies’ ability to work around supply-chain snarls better than their smaller competitors.
