For five years, WSJ. Magazine has started each week with My Monday Morning, our column featuring conversations with highly successful people about their routines. Reporter Lane Florsheim, who helms the column, kicked things off at a peculiar time—early 2020. “Most of the early MMMs are a pandemic time capsule, a routines column during the least routine time,” she says.
Today, Florsheim says it’s fun to engage with subjects in lighter ways, such as Sylvester Stallone talking about his frenemy Arnold Schwarzenegger, Amelia Dimoldenberg giving flirting tips or LL Cool J revealing that his ideal massage is one where he feels like he’s being treated like ground beef.

Do you have any favorite MMM interview moments?
Ian McKellen was talking about people constantly being on their phones in public. He said he has a fantasy of stopping them and saying, “Do you realize the love of your life just walked by?” To my surprise, he started singing: “Some enchanted evening, you may see a stranger… across a crowded room.…Not if you’ve been on your iPhone…” Maybe the best moment I’ve had on a Zoom.
Diane Keaton had been a long-time dream subject and she was pretty bashful during the interview. As we were ringing off, I congratulated her on the photo book she’d just published and she said, “Oh, shut up! Shut up. You’re a doll. Buh-bye.”
Have you adopted any MMM tips for your own routine?
I tried intermittent fasting after Kate Hudson made it sound really appealing. That was short-lived. My biggest takeaway from the column has been to try to carve out a bit of time for myself in the mornings, where I’m not waking up and immediately going on email or responding to texts, even if it’s just sitting on the couch with a coffee for a few minutes. My favorite routine is probably lighting incense while I work, read, clean, etc.
Which MMM interview have you received the most reader feedback on?
It was financial advisor Suze Orman for saying that she refuses to eat out: “I think that eating out on any level is one of the biggest wastes of money out there.” People understandably had feelings about that one.
What has been the most surprising routine you've heard from a MMM subject?
Nicolas Cage eats two cans of lentils with pesto sauce for breakfast and goes to bed at 7:30 p.m. Pablo Larraín tries to fast for 20 hours a day. Dakota Johnson can sleep for up to 14 hours a night. Manolo Blahnik, who sleeps from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., then starts working, also prefers cold showers. Naomi Campbell laughed when asked what she eats for breakfast: “Breakfast? The first thing I put in my system is warm water with lemon juice.”
Who is your dream MMM subject?
They’ll never do it, but the Olsen twins!
