here’s an active and often uncomfortable participation, I think, in holding firm in achievements and aspirations that others may not recognize; in remaining undimmed by an assault of low expectations. It’s something our Spring Women’s Style issue cover star, Kaia Gerber, seems to be all too familiar with.
Since she was born, the Gen Z businesswoman has been recognized as beautiful and privileged—two traits she hardly denies. But experiencing a lofty chorus of “Who knew?!” for also being literary or quick-witted still leaves her with that sharp surprise, that sudden intake of breath, that will be familiar to all of us. Then again, underestimation can be the highest-octane fuel. And if she didn’t need fullest faith to get as far as she has, what will doubting her now do? Try it at your peril.
