What THE WELL experts want you to know this week...

Apply

Self Tan from The Organic Pharmacy

Most self-tanning formulas smell terrible, which is why I was excited to discover this clean, 100-percent natural option (which, BTW, is available at THE WELL New York). Not only is it nearly odorless, but the product also includes a special DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) that’s made from sugar beets to leave you bronzed. Meaning, there’s no need to worry about unwanted chemicals absorbing into your skin. What’s more, the formula is loaded with skin-softening ingredients, such as aloe, sesame seed oil, jojoba oil and shea butter, to keep your skin hydrated and can be used to give you that perfect, safe sunkissed glow regardless of the season.

Follow

@recesstherapy on Instagram

This hilarious and often illuminating Instagram account features candid interviews with children between ages 2 and 9, mostly in New York City. Keeping up with @recesstherapy can offer plenty of perks for your mental well-being and overall mood, such as reminding you to be a little bit more like a child. It’s tagline? “Little kids, big questions, free advice” — including but not limited to “women can also have very, very nice mustaches,” “stay weird,” “every feeling is good because you feel something” and “don’t spread hate.”

Eat

Liver Bites

I often suggest to clients that they add liver to their diet because it — along with other organ meats — can be considered a superfood. Since not everyone is excited about the prospect of preparing liver at home (understatement!), I recommend beef liver bites from EPIC Provisions as a smart snack option. Eating them is one of my favorite ways to get good quality liver from grass-fed cows. It provides 10 grams of protein per serving and has a clean list of ingredients. Liver is up to 100 times higher in nutrients than the muscle meats we are more familiar with and is a potent source of B vitamins, vitamin A, zinc, an absorbable form of iron, a variety of trace minerals and more. If you are game to cook liver yourself, you can find some tips here.

Use

Coconut Oil as Down-There “Soap”

As many women know, it’s not a great idea to use fragranced soaps or body washes to cleanse the delicate microenvironment of your nether regions — doing so can be irritating and throw off vaginal flora and pH, resulting in urinary tract or other infections (not fun!). One gynecologist I interviewed suggested using pure, organic coconut oil in place of soap. Not only is it moisturizing, but coconut oil is naturally antifungal and, according to this doc, helps protect good bacteria, such as lactobacillus, which is necessary for vaginal health. A word of warning: Any oil will break down (and break!) a condom, so don’t slather yourself with coconut oil before using one!

Try

Using a Straw to Drink More Water

I used to struggle with drinking enough water throughout the day until I started carrying a reusable bottle with a built-in straw. Now I’m downing an average of 32 ounces of H2O (minimum) a day. It turns out I’m not alone — articles from Runner’s World and HuffPost suggest drinking from a straw helps you imbibe more than you would by just sipping from a glass or bottle. So if you’re ending your days frustrated by another dehydration headache, I would recommend making the switch. My personal favorite is this Hydro Flask.
