Jason's Pick: Coleburn 1972

Our Old & Rare head buyer Jason Vaswani selects an independently bottled single malt from a now-lost distillery…

"My selection for May is this Coleburn 1972, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail under their Connoisseurs Choice label. Lately I’ve been exploring a number of closed distilleries, and Coleburn is one I’ve been fortunate enough to try.

The Coleburn distillery sadly closed in 1985 during the “Whisky Loch”, a period in the mid-1980s which saw many distilleries close their doors across Scotland. Coleburn itself rarely appeared as a single malt, with only one known release in the Rare Malts range, as most of its spirit went into blends. It’s thanks to independent bottlers such as Gordon & MacPhail that we’re able to experience this single malt today.

On the palate, the Coleburn 1972 shows a gentle waxy texture, with stone fruits leading the way, apricots in particular, alongside tinned peaches, barley sugar accompanied by a light candied citrus. A quietly remarkable whisky, and one that too many will unfortunately miss.
Slàinte."
