Sam Altman, who was fired on Friday as CEO of OpenAI, has reached an agreement in principle to be reinstated, CTO Mira Murati told staff late Tuesday. The announcement ends a tense four and a half days in which the fate of one of the world's leading artificial intelligence developers hung in the balance. Almost all of its 770 employees threatened to quit and join Microsoft, along with Altman, if the company's board didn't bring him back.

The company's new chair will be Bret Taylor, a former co-CEO of Salesforce; former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers; and Adam D'Angelo, who was part of the six-person board that fired Altman with no warning on Friday, Murati said. The announcement implies Altman will not be a board director himself, at least not initially, even though he held that position four days ago. Greg Brockman, a key engineer at the company who was booted from the board on Friday and resigned shortly afternoon, also had been a director.
