This bowl is made to be effortlessly long sustaining, with the thick rim construction.
This is because of the bowl's rim mass and wall thickness working together to slow energy dissipation through the bronze. Less dampening of the vibration means the vibration sustains, on and on.
The lingam sits at the center of all that motion and doesn't move. It's a fixed anchor point, and because the vibrational energy has to organize itself around that anchor rather than spreading freely across a flat floor, it concentrates into specific patterns that bring the upper voices out more strongly.
This is why lingam bowls tend to carry richer, more layered overtones.
