Most we have built at The Ohm Store has been built around bronze. The work-hardened nature of bell metal bronze has deeply therapeutic impacts, it's been nearly our sole focus for 10 years.
The tradition deepens now.
Introducing, from the traditional home of the Best Handmade Bronze Gongs for 1,000+ years...
The Ohm Store's Chau Gong is being released today, in the first very limited release (with more to follow over the coming months as we prepare for Gong School)
Since early 2025, we have been in an active development relationship with a traditional Chinese gong maker, built exclusively to represent the wonderful nature of a bronze, fully handmade and work hardened Gong.
These are the first instruments from that collaboration. They are available now.
THE 40 INCH CHAU (Qiū) — $2,325 (5 available)
At 40 inches and approximately 42 pounds of bell-bronze, this instrument generates a deep fundamental in the low-mid range, a sub-bass presence, and a dense cluster of overlapping modal frequencies that operate simultaneously throughout the plate.
A full strike sustains for well over a minute, because the energy stored in a plate this size dissipates slowly and on its own terms.
At softer dynamics the individual frequency layers remain perceptible and distinct, which is what makes this instrument practical for close therapeutic work and not only large performance spaces.
New instruments benefit from regular playing during the first weeks of use as the plate's internal structure settles and the gong opens fully.
Comes with gong stand, mallet, and cover.
THE 36 INCH CHAU (Qiū) — $1,899 (2 available)
The 36" is built from the same alloy and the same process, at 36 inches and approximately 30 pounds.
It has a more defined character than the 40", with a dominant fundamental in the low-mid range and a strong sub-bass mode underneath, sustaining for well over thirty seconds on a full strike.
Its full complexity is accessible at any dynamic level and responds well to measured, skillful playing.
IF YOU WANT TO GO DEEPER?
We published a full guide to the Gong alongside this launch covering construction, acoustic physics, how to evaluate an instrument, and how to develop a working relationship with one.
If you are considering a purchase at this level, it is worth reading before you decide.
GONG SCHOOL
For anyone purchasing a gong with the intention of working with it professionally, the May cohort of Gong School is open for early enrollment.
Ben Irons leads the program. Ben trained at the conservatory level and has performed with the LA Philharmonic and San Diego Symphony.
The curriculum is rigorous and instrument-focused, 7 spots left in discounted early enrollment.
Warm Regards,
Frank Mocerino
P.S. Alongside these production instruments, we are releasing a small collection of prototype gongs from $999 to $1,600, one-of-a-kind instruments from our development process available at a discount on the collection page.
