I recently found my old Filo-fax, the ultimate diary/organizational tool for execs in the 1990s. When I moved to Hong Kong in 1997, determined to start my own designer brand, I added lots of blank pages to my organizer, which until then had been filled with task lists from my former job at American Express. On that long flight to my new home, I filled those pages with lofty business goals that trailed off into sketches of what my new brand would look like.

Looking back, what strikes me is how clearly those sketches yearned for what you now know as Tibi Fundamentals. On those now yellowed pages, you can see sketches of pieces that felt super special, in terms of their exaggerated details, embellishment, and other monikers of the moment’s trends. You can also see where those sketches were quickly abandoned, scribbled through in frustration. Even now as I write this, my neck tenses up; I remember the feeling clearly because nothing I conceived felt fluid or settled.

But when you flip forward a few pages, you can see clearly new-found confidence as I abandoned overt novelty and instead focused on laying down the fundamentals. The pieces I had to get straight in my head before I could even think about all the other “stuff”. There’s even a notation where I wrote, “what are the items that will work back with every incredible, sometimes over the top, pieces I want to design?”.

Back then, I knew viscerally what I hadn’t been able to state so clearly until I’d written The Creative Pragmatist: Your closet requires a support system to make it work. Otherwise, getting dressed can feel like sheer chaos. It’s important to have those grounding pieces, so that whatever outfits you create, your identity remains present. The Fundamentals can be the outfit (especially when I’m in need of a clear head) but their utility soars when you realize how they give a spine to the other incredible pieces you may own or be thinking about acquiring. That exaggerated ruffle shirt I scored in the narrow stalls of a Paris flea market becomes decidedly me when paired back with my nylon Stella cargo pants. The same pants that work as my go to suit and my airport uniform.

So today I introduce to you our new Fundamentals Collection, updated each season with new colors we find interesting, and occasionally a new style that’s graduated from collection because it so excellently performed on the balance of utility and style. We never reinvent the wheel here, because that would unravel the intention. You see, very little has changed since those initial sketches in the ‘90s. Not because of nostalgia for that decade, but rather because at our very core we are Chill, Modern and Classic (CMC) all at once. Regardless of what the calendar says, this was and continues to be part of us. Each piece, you’ll find, is imbued with these three important adjectives, never forsaking creativity for pragmatism. You’ll love the new colorways and textures, they make any closet stand taller.
