look at everything he can't do

Christopher gave me a pretty honest assessment of his guitar playing.

He plays slowly.

He misses notes.

He still can't properly play an F barre chord.

And when he started our 30-Day Jumpstart, he struggled enough that he decided to start it over.

You could look at that list and think:

“I'm just not getting this.”

But here's the other list.

Christopher completed the Jumpstart.

He finished his first Benchmark song, Hotel California.

And most importantly, he kept picking up his guitar.

I think guitar players have a bad habit of measuring progress by everything they still can't do.

The chord that still buzzes.

The song that's still too fast.

The technique that hasn't clicked yet.

But what if you occasionally asked a different question:

“What can I do today that I couldn't do when I started?”

Christopher still has plenty to learn.

So do I.

But he's playing guitar.

And that seems like a much better scoreboard.

If you're tired of feeling behind because of everything you can't play yet...
