twenty years

David wrote something to me the other day that caught my attention.

"I had a 20-year history of starts and stops and never really making progress."

Twenty years.

That's a long time to carry around the idea that maybe you're just not someone who sticks with guitar.

But then, a little later in his note, he wrote this:

"Consistency = progress = surprise. I didn't know I could play that."

That last sentence made me smile.

"I didn't know I could play that."

After teaching adults for years, I've noticed something.

Very few people quit because they aren't capable.

Most quit because they never stay with one approach long enough to surprise themselves.

That's why I'm always encouraging people to focus on showing up instead of trying to be perfect.

Those little daily sessions don't feel life-changing while you're doing them.

Then one day you play something you couldn't play a month ago...

...and you surprise yourself.
