1 THE ROAD TRIP  · MOVE

Long drives are about the people in the car, not the playlist.

The honest truth about road trips: nobody actually agrees on music for eight hours straight. The good ones have a rhythm — someone DJs, somebody else takes a nap, you stop at a gas station, repeat. Your audio gear should follow that rhythm, not fight it.

PACK IT

A pocketable Bluetooth speaker. Phone speakers are for FaceTime, not a six-hour drive.

BONUS

A speaker that doubles as a powerbank earns its keep when somebody's phone hits 8% an hour from anywhere.

SKIP IT

Cassette adapters, FM transmitters, and that tangle of aux cables in the glovebox.

2 THE FLIGHT  · FOCUS

On a plane, silence is the feature. Everything else is a distraction.

Active noise cancellation is the only piece of audio tech that genuinely changes how a long flight feels. The catch is comfort: an ANC headphone that's great for the first hour but pinches your ears by hour three is worse than nothing. Look for over-ear cups deep enough that the driver doesn't touch your ear, and check the headband weight — anything north of 280g and you'll feel it on a red-eye.

"One more thing: bring the 3.5mm cable. In-flight entertainment systems still use it, and you'll want a movie option when your phone dies somewhere over Iceland."

PACK IT

Over-ear ANC headphones, the 3.5mm cable, a USB-C charging cable that's long enough to reach the seatback port.

SKIP IT

Tiny in-ear ANC buds for sleep. They fall out, the case dies, and the ANC isn't deep enough for engine drone.

BONUS

Turn ANC on before takeoff. The change in cabin pressure plus the engine spool-up is the loudest part of the whole trip.

3 THE BEACH & OUTDOORS  · MOVE

Sand, salt, sunscreen, and someone's labrador. Build for it.

The beach is the most punishing environment most consumer electronics ever meet. 
Look for IPX7 at minimum — that's "survives full immersion for thirty minutes," which is roughly the worst thing a wave will do to it. Skip the fabric-grille speakers that hold sand forever; rubberised housings rinse clean under a tap.

"One quiet rule: keep the volume reasonable. The beach is somebody else's quiet place too."

PACK IT

A waterproof speaker, IPX7 or better. A microfiber cloth. A small dry bag for the speaker on the walk back.

SKIP IT

Anything labelled "splashproof." Splashes aren't the problem — sand, salt, and a forgotten tide are.

BONUS

Rinse with fresh water that same evening. Don't wait for the car ride home — salt sets in fast.
