What is the St. Benedict medal?
The Medal of St. Benedict, as we know it today,
is the Jubilee medal that was first struck in 1880 by
the Archabbey of Monte Cassino to commemorate the
14th centenary anniversary of St. Benedict’s birth.
St. Benedict was one of the greatest
saints
of all time.
He was the founder of the
Benedictine Order, and is called the
Father of Western monasticism.
Because St. Benedict is the patron saint
against
many forms of diabolical influence—
including
witchcraft,
poison, disease, and
temptation—his
medal
has the power
to protect
those who use
it properly, as a sacramental,
from
various evils and temptations.
Each of the letters engraved on the front
and back of the medal stand for
Latin prayers of exorcism.

seen
holding a cross in his right hand
and the
Rule he wrote
for his monks in his
left hand.
To the right there is an
image of
a poisoned cup
which he was once given
by
some of his own monks,
who had turned aginst him:
when he
made the
Sign
of the
Cross over it, it shattered.
On the other side of Benedict,
a
raven can be seen.
This is because an enemy once
sent him poisoned
bread; but God sent a raven
to fly off
with it,
thereby
protecting Benedict from harm.
