Almost one year ago, on 22 August 2025, famine was confirmed in Gaza City and the surrounding areas. Since then, Gaza is no longer classified as experiencing famine and that progress for families is real. Supporters like you responded immediately, and because you did, UNICEF has been able to stay and scale up our lifesaving care for children.

But the situation remains catastrophic, and for children, the urgent need hasn't gone away. Children in Gaza need more than hope. They need food, water, and safety – now.

The reality today

What families are facing

Food is still desperately scarce:

About 77 per cent of Gaza's population face severe food shortages
For children under five:
- Over 101,000 are projected to suffer from multiple types of malnutrition this year, including 31,000 severe cases which can become life-threatening without urgent treatment.
- 55 per cent have access to only two or fewer food groups.

Clean water is just as scarce:

Nearly 90 per cent of water and sanitation infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed
Up to 70 per cent of families can't access even six litres per person per day for drinking and cooking – far below the 15 litres needed to meet basic needs. This puts children at extreme risk of dehydration and deadly waterborne diseases.

MEET MISK

Misk is just three months old, living in a tent with her family. She is suffering malnourishment, and her condition is worsening by the day.

Clean water is scarce. Sanitation is almost non-existent. Insects and rats move freely through the makeshift shelters families like Misk's now call home. She already bears insect bites on her small body, a stark sign of how dangerous her surroundings have become.

For an infant already fighting malnutrition, this isn't just unsafe. It's life-threatening. And Misk is one of thousands.

ON THE GROUND

How we're responding

UNICEF has continued to deliver lifesaving assistance across the Gaza Strip despite enormous challenges and danger.

In the first half of 2026 alone:

More than 19,400 children were screened and treated for acute malnutrition,
Over 1.15 million people were reached with safe water for drinking and daily needs.

We're working to reach up to 1.5 million people a month with clean water but delivering it remains difficult and dangerous. In June this year, deadly attacks on a key water filling point killed two UNICEF-contracted truck drivers as they tried to provide water for families. That station, relied on by more than a quarter of a million people, is now inaccessible.

But we haven’t given up. UNICEF and partners are now trucking water from a desalination plant instead – a more complex and costly alternative.
