Dear -,
Right now, children's lives are being saved by something small enough to fit in the palm of your hand â a peanut paste, inspired by Nutella, that a child can eat straight from the sachet. No fridge, hospital or clean water needed.
For 30 years, ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) â a sachet of fortified peanut paste â has transformed how we treat children with severe malnutrition. It works fast. It can be delivered anywhere. And it saves lives.
"Itâs quite a small packet, but it's full of everything a child needs to recover quickly. The balance of micronutrients such as fats, proteins and carbohydrates helps stimulate a childâs recovery."
â Alison Fleet, an Australian nutritionist from Sydney and Technical Nutrition Specialist at UNICEFâs Supply Division.
Every gram is optimised: Each 92-gram sachet provides around 500 calories and is packed with essential nutrients â energy, protein, vitamins and minerals â to help children recover from severe acute malnutrition.
Since 1996, UNICEF has delivered 8.7 billion sachets to children living in the worldâs most challenging environments, making UNICEF the largest supplier of RUTF globally.
This milestone reflects extraordinary progress. But UNICEFâs lifesaving work is far from over.

Halimah's seven-month-old daughter, Asyaa, who suffers from malnutrition, is given a sachet of ready-to-eat therapeutic food (RUTF) during a follow up visit to a UNICEF-supported nutrition centre in Sudan.
Globally, 1 in 5 deaths among children under five are caused by severe acute malnutrition, making it one of the biggest threats to child survival.
The risk of malnutrition rises sharply during emergencies like conflicts or natural disasters, when families are displaced, and food and clean water supplies are disrupted.

More than 1.6 million people â or 77 per cent of the population â are still facing high levels of food insecurity.

Lebanon
Years of economic collapse, combined with escalating violence, have severely worsened food insecurity in Lebanon. As a result, stunting among children under five has doubled to 14 per cent since 2021, putting thousands of young lives at risk.Â

Sudan
An estimated 825,000 children across Sudan are expected to suffer from the most severe form of malnutrition in 2026 â a seven per cent increase from 2025. Â
For three decades, RUTF has helped UNICEF reach children in the hardest places â yet just as the need is rising, funding is being cut, putting childrenâs lives at risk. We can only keep reaching children with urgent support from people like you.
-, it starts with you. |
