Inside a white supremacist group's messaging
|
Internal documents obtained by USA TODAY reveal the inner workings
of a rapidly expanding white nationalist network that's added hundreds of new members across 49 states within the last two years. The documents, leaked to USA TODAY by a source inside Patriot Front, show how the group finds new recruits, choreographs its rallies and events, and obscures its true mission behind language stressing patriotism and plausible deniability.
|
“They’re trying to attract the widest possible audience so they put out some messaging that is patriotic in its orientation,
” said J.M. Berger, a researcher and academic who co-authored a seminal 2020 study on Patriot Front’s propaganda efforts. “They’re trying to capture people who if you just said ‘Hey, do you want to join the Nazi Party?’ would say ‘No.’”

And now on to November... ✅
|
Primaries in six states including California, Iowa, New Jersey and New Mexico are shaping how November's elections will look
, from who'll succeed Gavin Newsom as California's governor to whether a Trump endorsement is enough to keep a missing New Jersey congressman from losing his seat.

In Iowa
, Trump's winning streak in Republican primaries screeched to a halt as his preferred candidate fell to a novice in the Iowa Republican primary for governor. New Mexico may elect the nation's first female Native American governor, and a reality TV star will face off against an incumbent mayor in Los Angeles.

The ongoing turmoil at a TV institution has reached a boiling point: Scott Pelley, a respected longtime correspondent at "60 Minutes"
was fired late Tuesday, and then he and his former bosses traded ugly accusations of bias, censorship, cruelty and dishonesty. Pelley sparred with newly named "60 Minutes" executive producer Nick Bilton in a staff meeting, challenging the firing of two of his colleagues, Bilton's lack of broadcast journalism experience and the changing direction under new Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss of America's oldest and most watched weekly news magazine.

Gen Z's reality TV stars are grappling with an enemy that might be harder to maneuver around than a duplicitous roommate or a cheating love interest: their own online presence and ill-considered, poorly worded, or even downright racist past posts.
