¹ How we calculated this comparison: The October forecast of £1,756 (an average of the latest predictions from British Gas, EDF, and E.ON Next, correct 27 July, 9am) uses Ofgem’s new 'typical usage' figures. These were updated in July 2026 to reflect that households are generally using less energy (2,500 kWh of electricity and 9,500 kWh of gas a year).
To make a fair, like-for-like comparison with previous years, we have to recalculate older price caps using these new lower usage figures. For example, the January 2024 cap made headlines at £1,928, but that was based on higher energy use. If we apply January 2024's rates to today’s lower typical usage, the cost was actually around £1,723. This means that, for the exact same amount of energy, the predicted £1,756 cap represents the highest true cost to consumers since the 2022/23 crisis.
