I was 19 when we met, and he was 21. He was handsome, charismatic, funny, adventurous, and the kind of person who could make friends anywhere he went. He loved surfing, snowboarding, being outdoors, and spending time with family and friends.

Most of all, he loved being a dad.

When melanoma took his life in September 2001, our three boys were just 1, 3, and 6 years old.

Nothing could have prepared us for that loss.

In the years that followed, my grief slowly transformed into purpose. I became determined to help other families understand the importance of protecting their skin and preventing sun damage before it becomes something much more serious.

That mission eventually became UV Skinz.

Today, nearly 25 years later, Darren’s legacy lives on. Not only through UV Skinz, but through our three sons, who have grown into remarkable men. Every day I see pieces of their father in them: their smiles, their laughter, their expressions, their kindness, and their character.

I often wonder what Darren would think if he could see them now.

I know he’d be incredibly proud.
