One question we get continually asked by our customers is 'How Do I Clean My Blinds or Curtains?'

Cleaning window blinds and curtains doesn’t need to be a daunting or time-consuming task. In fact, just like most cleaning, if done regularly, there is less work required overall and your window blinds and curtains are continuously maintained, prolonging their lifespan.

Whilst cleaning window blinds and curtains doesn’t sound like a fun task, it also doesn’t have to be difficult one.

We've put together a simple guide to help you tackle the regular maintenance of your window coverings without the need for professional assistance.

CLEANING HONEYCOMB BLINDS

Honeycomb Blinds are a popular window blind choice for many homes in Australia as they offer excellent insulation properties, helping to keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer. The Honeycomb Blind is designed to trap air within its cells. This design makes them a super insulating blind however can sometimes allow small bugs, dirt, and dust to get caught in the cell.

No need to worry, just take your vacuum with the soft brush head and run it down the side of the blind to suck out anything caught in the cells.

You can also use the soft brush head on the front and back of the blind to remove dust quickly and simply. Vacuuming the blind regularly will ensure that no dust can build up on the blind and minimizes the need to complete a deep clean on the blind regularly.

For tough stains, use a damp cloth or sponge to dab or blot the stain. Avoid rubbing and using harmful chemicals that contain bleach as this may damage the fabric. If you are unsure how a particular stain remover may affect your blinds you can always order a FREE Sample Swatch to test out first!

CLEANING ROLLER BLINDS

The Roller Blind is the most common window blind purchased in Australia. For regular maintenance, roll the blind so it is completely open and use a feather duster or microfibre cloth to remove dust from the front and back of the blind. Roller Blinds are rather durable and can handle a bit of water. Using a damp sponge or cloth, working your way from top to bottom, wipe over the blind and remember to regularly rinse your cloth to remove dirt and dust.

For tough stains, use a small amount of dish washing liquid however avoid rubbing the fabric. Once you have finished cleaning, ensure you leave the Roller Blind open and allow it to dry completely before rolling back up.

CLEANING VENETIAN BLINDS

When it comes to Venetian Blinds, the slats can be a little more time consuming to keep clean. This is why regular maintenance is even more important for Venetian Blinds.

For regular cleaning, simply dust over the entire blind with a feather duster to remove loose dust, this will help to avoid build up, making it harder to clean. Venetian Blinds will require a more thorough clean once or twice a year.

For Timber Venetian Blinds, avoid the use of cleaning products and where possible, avoid getting wet. Start by tilting the slat to the down position, give a quick dusting over with the feather duster and then tilt the slat to the up position and repeat. Then use a microfibre cloth or put a sock on your hand and clean each slat individually by running your hand left to right starting at the top slat on the blind. Ensure you wrap your hand round the entire slat to get the front and back of the slat in one go.

CLEANING ROMAN BLINDS

As Roman Blinds are a fabric blind it’s important to take care of the fabric when cleaning.

Avoid chemicals that will damage the fabric and if you have a stain, try a damp cloth and dab the strain, avoid rubbing.

For regular maintenance, simply use your soft brush head on the vacuum to remove dust.

CLEANING CURTAINS

Cleaning curtains depends heavily on the type of fabric and the curtain header style chosen to make your curtains.

Many curtain fabric types will recommend dry cleaning as the best option to avoid damaging your curtains. However, it is best to check with the curtain supplier for the best way to clean your curtain fabric.

For regular maintenance, use a feather duster to control dust and for hand drawn curtains, ensure clean hands are used to control curtain to avoid stains. Avoid harmful chemicals to clean your curtains as this may cause damage to the fabric. If you have a steamer at home, this is an easy way to clean your curtains.
