Interstitial cystitis, as I am sure you are aware, is an inflamed or irritated bladder wall associated with declining female hormones, inflammatory response, bladder infection, and/or nerve damage. We do not fully understand this concern, however supplements may help to provide some benefits. Remedies aim to quench inflammation and encourage the healing of soft tissues. I have found the use of MSM tablets to be useful for painful bladder syndrome and interstitial cystitis. MSM is an organic sulphur compound that displays potent anti-inflammatory properties as well as displaying cell fortifying benefits. It is most definitely the supplement of choice for this syndrome. Some women have also found relief from the use of Turmeric Curcumin C3 Complex. Curcumin and some of the actives in turmeric root not only display potent anti-inflammatory properties, but they also have some antimicrobial action should this be the cause. (Higher Nature, MSM 180 Tablets, £21.95; (DoSe Turmeric Curcumin C3 Complex, £27) If you suspect idiopathic bacteria to be the cause, then consider taking Waterfall D-Mannose tablets at a daily dose of one tablet twice a day. This long chain carbohydrate, normally used for the treating UTI's, is very soothing on the bladder wall so does help to alleviate bladder pain. (SC Nutra, Waterfall D-Mannose Super Strength, £22.99)
