Precision in the Douro, momentum for Italian whites

Decanter reports that the producers behind the “Douro Boys” are back in focus, but the mood is different now. The emphasis has shifted from expansion to refinement, with more attention on vineyard investment, old-vine genetics, style, and long-term identity as the next generation takes the lead.

Decanter highlighted a DWWA masterclass in London focused on Northern Italy’s white wines, featuring six bottles that scored 95+ points at the 2025 awards. Italy was one of the top three medal-winning countries at DWWA 2025, and 39 of its 65 Gold medals went to white wines, giving more weight to a category that has often sat behind the country’s reds.

Wine-Searcher’s latest ranking of the world’s most wanted wines still centers on the usual heavyweights, with names like Screaming Eagle, DRC, Petrus, Lafite, and Sassicaia leading the list. In a market that has become more selective, buyer attention is still clustering around wines with deep reputations and tight supply.
