Sparkling momentum, Loire revival, and Napa’s new luxury

Sparkling wine in New York has moved well beyond novelty, with producers across the Finger Lakes, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley pushing quality higher and building a stronger identity around traditional-method wines. The momentum has been building for years, with more producers treating sparkling wine as a serious long-term focus rather than a side project.

Pineau d’Aunis is finding new life in the Loire as growers and winemakers lean into what makes the grape distinctive instead of treating it like a curiosity. More producers are putting real care behind it, and the category is starting to carry itself differently as a result. What once felt niche is beginning to look more like a lasting part of the Loire’s identity.

Decanter’s May feature on Napa argues that the region’s newer expression of luxury is less about flash and more about sustainable farming, stewardship, and authenticity. It points to growing use of organic, biodynamic, and regenerative practices, with estates such as Spottswoode, Grgich Hills, and Joseph Phelps putting more weight on how the vines are grown, not just how the wines are marketed.
