What is the best wormer for your dog?

The most common worms in the UK are: roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, lungworms and tapeworms. Puppies and older dogs are especially vulnerable to worms, but all dogs are at risk.

Our vet-approved guide explains the different types of dog worms and how to choose the most suitable option for your dog.

“The most appropriate worming routine depends on your dog’s lifestyle and local parasite risk. It is important to ensure your dog is on a plan to treat the worms they are likely to encounter.”

Dr Nicholas Garside BVetMed MRCVS

When Choosing A Wormer, Consider:

Your Dog's Age

The average adult dog should be wormed every 1-3 months, depending on their lifestyle. Monthly worming is recommended for senior dogs.

Puppies should be wormed at 2, 5, 8, 10 and 12 weeks, then monthly until they are 6 months old.

Whether They Scavenge, Hunt or Eat Raw Food

These are associated with a higher risk of worms.

Exposure To Snails or Slugs

These are often associated with lungworm, which can be very serious.

Contact With Other Dogs

Such as licking (especially the rear) and ingesting faeces.

Ease Of Administration

It is important to ensure that your dog receives the full dose of whatever product your are using.

No single active ingredient protects against every type of worm. A combination tablet and often 2 types of wormers are advised to be used together for the best protection.
