I learned the hard way the disadvantages of over-exfoliating. Back when I had a 22-step bedtime routine, I’d slather on a decongesting exfoliant, regenerating serum (like a retinol), and exfoliating acids in quick succession—often in the same night. Sometimes, I’d even do a resurfacing face mask. What I thought was helping my skin get baby-soft and smooth was actually damaging my skin barrier, causing breakouts, and exacerbating my already-oily skin.

A year later, I found beauty in simplification. By prioritizing hydration, nourishing, gentle ingredients—and about a dozen less steps—my skin quickly recovered.
