Humans are trichromats. We have three types of cone in the eye, tuned to red, green and blue. So we’re pretty discriminating in the middle of the colour spectrum but not so great with ultraviolet or infrared.

Dogs get by on two cones, trading colour for better night vision. Mantis shrimp run twelve to sixteen receptors and see into the ultraviolet, sometimes the infrared. Bluebottle butterflies have fifteen.

We might never match up to a mantis shrimp but there are efforts to get us closer. At Berkeley, neuroscientists have been firing a precision laser at individual cone cells, one at a time, to trigger colours that don't occur in nature. One came out so far outside the usual red-green-blue limits it had to be given a new name.

And experimental contact lenses laced with nanomaterials can convert infrared into something the eye can read, so you can finally see the patterns on a leaf that were always there but invisible.
